Design idea:Google Play experience for app download over mobile data connection
As a user and a product owner who is connected to mobile data I want to know how large this app is so that I can decide whether to download it over mobile data or not.
This sounds like a very simple user story, and I find it hard to understand why isn’t Google play doing it!
They thought about downloading large apps over mobile data and they warn the user. Let’s have a look.
Now what’s wrong with this?
I’m a user, downloading a large app over mobile data. Google teams decided that this warning would be sufficient for me. They don’t even tell the user how large the app is.
I like the download over wifi feature they have put. It’s handy & easy to use. But what I did first was that I dismissed the popup, went to details, scrolled to the bottom, viewed size and then decided to download it over wifi.
I hope that at the near future Google play app team considers adding the size in the summary for users connected over mobile data. Even 20 MB of data can be costly for people at 3rd world countries.
It’s a 3rd world problem maybe, but good share of Google play visitors come from 3rd world countries already .. And on the other hand, if I’m a first world user but I’m on roaming and needing to download something I would be keen to see such a feature.
